The day I realized

Believe it or not, I used to dislike reading books. I would get bored of them too quickly and just gave up on them. My family used to always encourage me to read books, but I never listened to them. Ironically, when they stopped encouraging me, I started to read. At a young age, all we wanted to do was go outside and play! No one had the time to sit inside and read. It’s like doing homework in the summer. Now, everything has changed. Instead of going outside, I’d rather stay inside and read.

My oldest brother was the one who always wanted me to read. Here’s a little funny story. Back in grade school, we got these Scholastic papers where we could order some items. I loved everything they sold, but one thing caught my eye the most. It was a pink box with feathers around it and inside was pencils, a mini notebook and other things. My oldest brother told me that he would buy it for me on one condition: I have to buy a book and read it. I dreaded the thought but I accepted. Once I got the book, I put it aside and never read it. My brother doesn't know this yet (shh, don’t tell him). I still have it on my bookshelf, sitting there, untouched. It was a book by Tony Di Terlizzi called Les Chroniques de Spiderwick : Le Secret de Lucinda.

I never discovered my passion for reading until the start of high school. My friends would tell me of the different books they read and it interested me. In my grade 9 English class, we had to read the first book of the Harry Potter series. I wasn't happy because at the time I hated Harry Potter, although I didn't even know what it was about (yes, I judged a book by its cover). I thought to myself that it shouldn't be that bad, so I’ll give it a try! Of course after reading it I fell in love. I decided to read the rest of the series. Also, I decided never to judge a book by its cover.

It was at that time I realized that I loved to read and get lost in books. Also, I loved fantasy because they were very creative and full of excitement. It may seem like a “nerdy” thing to do, but it’s not. Reading is much more than that. Not only is reading fun and exciting, it can teach you so much! It enhances your vocabulary, opens up your imagination and shows you the world in many different perspectives.

So, whenever you don’t want to try something because it seems boring, then try it! You’ll never know, it could probably be the best thing that ever happened to you.

  1. I agree one hundred percent that reading is not nerdy. I think reading is great for everyone to do, it can really help with out vocabulary and knowledge of every day things. For instance, I just started reading in french to help my vocabulary in french, it really does help! I have always loved reading, sometimes it is even better then watching a movie because we can picture it better then if it were on a tv screen

    1. That’s true and it’s a great idea to read in French! I've never read a book in French other than the ones that we’re assigned in class. I should read in French more often. Also, it can help you maintain your language. I agree, books are so much better than the movie. They are so much more detailed, so it helps us picture it better!

  2. Reading this blog I had only one thing in mind: this is the story of my life! Seriously. My sister was a reader. I kid you not, she read the entire Twilight series TWICE in less than a week. Me? I wouldn't even read the books that we were assigned in class. My parents always told me that I should read, that I should be more like my sister and like yourself, once they stopped, I was so into reading that I spent an entire summer with a book glued in front of my face. I was ordering books from overseas and buying every classic I could get my hands on. My sister actually began to get more involved in her music that she wasn't reading at all anymore - it's like we switched places! This post makes me miss my books so much. With work and school and all the crazy stuff life throws at you, I haven't picked up a book in almost two years (apart from the ones we read in class). I need to start making time for reading again. Not only is it relaxing, but it truly does engage the imagination! I love how the book plays out in my head - it's like a movie, only better because you co-create it.

    Great post, Fatima!

    1. Thank you Sarah! That’s pretty amazing! Your sister sure had a lot of time on her hands! I guess we just like to do things on our own. I know it’s very difficult to find time to just sit and read, I’m always busy with school work and I have a pretty busy semester. You should make some time for reading; it’s like a stress reliever and you forget about the world for a while. I love that part about reading; you get to choose how the story plays out in your head!

  3. I can totally agree! I was never a big reader when I was younger. I never saw the point of sitting down and reading a book when you could go play sports outside. But I had that "day I realized" that reading wasn't so bad when I first read the book "Bridge to Terabithia ". It captivated me so much in a way that no other book had done before. I actually felt like i could feel what the characters were feeling through the book. It was an amazing experience. I read the book in one day!! Aha Great blog and I can't wait to read your other ones.

    1. Thank you Jillian! That’s why I love reading; I love the experience you get while reading a book! I’ve never read “Bridge to Terabithia”, I never knew there was a book based on it, I only watched the movie and I loved it! I should read the book and I hope I like it as much as you!

  4. Your story really made me laugh! I still remember those Scholastic papers, they were always so fun to look at! I find us very similar, I always loved the items that did NOT include any books. However, what really caught my attention was you talking about how you only started to read in high school! That is actually so twisted because my good friend stopped reading in high school and she was a huge reader, she had "better things to do". I completely agree with her though, now a days teenagers are more busy with their phones, school and work...Unfortunately, I never really have the time to read, so I can't really relate to you. I am not much of a big reader anyway, but maybe I should start carrying around a book and try my best to read it!
    Very cool blog Fatima!

    1. Thanks Josianne! They were the best; I wish we still had them! It’s true; I barely have time to read now because of all the school work we’re given. It’s hard to find time nowadays, but I still love reading and I try to make as much time as I can to read, even if it’s for an hour or so. You should try reading, it’s something different, but not everyone likes reading so it’s alright if you don’t like it!
